You will be able to adapt the pattern to the projects you have chosen for family, friends or any other occasion. There are so many types of yarn for Knitting and Crocheting, plus the variety of colors.  The types of yarn are usually suggested along with the pattern but the possibilities are endless.  There are yarns like Cashmere or Alpaca which are soft and luxurious.  When Knitting and Crocheting you might want to consider, depending on the project, a Worsted yarn is very practical for everyday wear!   Some prefer acrylics because of the ease in washing and being of nonallergenic qualities.  Wool Blends are warmer and some are machine washable.  Mohair and other blends are very soft and look very dressy when finished.
    If you want to make something in a hurry, Bulky Yarntends to work well, but using a larger needle, size 10-15 or larger.  There aren't as many stitches or rows involved! Another suggestion for Bulky would be to use a double strand of Worsted yarn which gives it the same affect. When Knitting and Crocheting some garments, the pattern should look the same on both sides, such as scarves  or afghans.
If you are using the Fingering weight yarn, the needles should be a size 1-2-3.
Sport weight yarn, 4-5-6, Worsted yarn 6-7-8-9. And Bulk yarn 10-15 or larger, depending how loose you want to make it.
Something you should always do is make a swatch to determine the Guage, and
the width and texture you need! Having a Hobby such as Knitting and Crocheting is a form of discipline for relaxation!  It also makes you happier because of your accomplishments  and  a healthier mind.  It helps with your creativity and eagerness to increase your skills. When Knitting and Crocheting for your family and friends it's showing them a loving gesture by choosing specific projects for them. The type of Knitting and Crocheting stitches you will use depends on the project. Some Knitting and Crocheting projects look better with certain types of stitches.
    Some patterns require using more than one pattern in the project, such as an afghan, depending on how complicated it will be! When you start Knitting and Crocheting a project, you will want to determine the terms in casting on stitches for knitting, and how to chain stitches for crocheting. These are called the Foundation Stitches to start your project. Also, there are Conversion Charts for Knitting and Crocheting, if for some reason you want to convert one or the other.  There's the Metric, U.K. former Canada, and the U.S. sizes.  It's possible you might want to do this if you happen to have old patterns from many years past that call for those sizes which were used in Grandma's Era.
